The Gifted Kids Programme

Glendowie Primary School offers students from Year 4 to 8, opportunity to participate in the Gifted Kids Programme at Tamaki Intermediate school.  (This programme is also sometimes referred to as GKP or One Day School).  It provides one day a week for students to work alongside their intellectual peers – to learn, explore, problem solve and debate at a pace and within an environment appropriate to their needs and abilities.  Classes are limited to 15 students each day and about 20 students from Glendowie Primary attend each year.

Students at Glendowie Primary are chosen initially because they have achieved in approximately the top 5% in school assessment and standardised tests.   On our recommendation, the teachers at GKP then collect further assessments that include: classroom teacher observation data, current work samples, a parent questionnaire and a half day in-class assessment at the Tamaki unit.  There is a focus not only on the student’s intelligences and competencies at academic tasks but also their social and emotional skills, learning styles and their level of enthusiasm.  Once all the information has been gathered, the successful candidates are then informed if they have been accepted onto the programme.

Once the students are accepted to Gifted Kids, they remain on the programme until their final year at our school.  Students do not wear school uniform on the day they attend the programme.  They are picked up by the GKP van at 8:30am and returned to school by 3:00pm.  The BOT generously support this programme and parents are also asked to contribute some cost, but this is negotiated with the Principal at GKP. For further enquires about this programme please contact Christine Matos via the school office.
